What You Need to Know

The rules have changed. Here is what is actually happening in international trade right now.

US Customs

US Now Requires HS Codes on All Shipments

US Customs and Border Protection now requires HS codes for all shipments, including those below the $800 de minimis threshold. This affects every Shopify, Amazon, and eBay seller shipping to American customers.

No HS code means your package gets flagged. Flagged packages get delayed, inspected, or returned. We have seen shipments held for weeks because of missing or incorrect codes.

Trade Basics

How HS Codes Actually Work

The Harmonised System is used by 200+ countries to classify products. The first 6 digits are universal. Then countries add their own digits for specifics, which is why US codes are 10 digits and Australian codes are 8.

The code determines your duty rate, whether you need permits, and how fast your shipment clears customs. Get it wrong and you pay the consequences.

E-commerce

What This Means for Shopify Sellers

International shipping documentation requirements have increased. Accurate HS codes let you calculate duties at checkout, which means no surprise fees for your customers when their package arrives.

Surprise fees cause chargebacks, negative reviews, and returned packages. Correct classification from the start avoids all of this.

Why Getting This Right Matters

HS codes are not just paperwork. They determine what you pay, how fast you clear customs, and whether your shipment even gets through.

1

Duty Rates

The HS code sets the duty rate. Wrong code means wrong rate. Pay too little and you face audits, back payments, and fines up to 4x the original duty. Pay too much and you are throwing money away on every shipment.

2

Import Restrictions

Certain codes trigger permits, inspections, or outright bans. Food products, chemicals, electronics with batteries, wooden packaging, and anything with animal products all have specific requirements tied to their HS code.

3

Free Trade Benefits

Free Trade Agreements can reduce duties to zero, but only with the right classification and proof of origin. Claim benefits on the wrong code and you face penalties. Miss benefits you were entitled to and you overpay.

4

Clearance Speed

Accurate codes clear fast. Mismatched codes get pulled for inspection. We have seen one incorrect digit hold a container for 3 weeks. For e-commerce, that delay means refunds, chargebacks, and unhappy customers.

5

Record Keeping

Customs authorities keep records. They can audit past shipments up to 5 years back. Consistent, accurate classification now means fewer problems if you ever get audited later.

6

Customer Trust

When your customers see accurate duty estimates at checkout and receive packages without surprise fees, they trust you. That trust means repeat purchases and fewer support tickets about unexpected charges.
